The Suicide Hotline is in danger of losing the number 1-800-SUICIDE to the US Department of Health and Human Services. They have until October 22nd to comply with a request from the FCC. The hotline was founded by Reese Butler in 1998 after he lost his wife Kristin to suicide. The Kristin Brooks Hopeline helps around half a million people each year, and keeps all calls strictly confidential.
The danger facing the hotline is a large number of outstanding phone bills. The hotline has had a partnership with the Take Action Tour and the Warped Tour to fund it in the past, but needs crucial help now in order to maintain ownership of the phone number. The funding also helps with developing future services, such as training for online counselors.
Please help by either writing to the Federal government, the FCC, telling your friends, or donating here. You can also help by getting a “Pick Up The Phone” tee here. The hotline has helped close to 3 million people since they started taking calls. It’s our turn to help now.
